NEWS BRIEF: Unprecedented National Health Care Fraud Crackdown; 301 Individuals Charged; $900 Million in False Billing Alleged
The joint DOJ-HHS Medicare Fraud Strike Force and twenty-three state Medicaid Fraud Control Units executed an unprecedented nationwide sweep earlier this week, announced as the largest health care fraud takedown in history. The raids resulted in criminal and civil charges against 301 individuals, including 61 doctors, nurses, infusion therapy clinics, home health care agencies and other health care providers and businesses, for their alleged participation in health care fraud schemes involving approximately $900 million in false billings. The sweep had additional ramifications: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is suspending payment to a number of providers.
